2011 marked an exciting year for TCU Athletics as it accepted an invitation to the Big 12 conference. Consisting of Texas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Baylor, Texas Tech, Kansas, Kansas State, Iowa State and new addition West Virginia, the conference will realign the Horned Frogs with old rivalries and regional competitors.

Although college football just recently wrapped up its season, it’s time to start looking ahead to driving season ticket sales. TCU will finally be able to introduce a greatly revamped Amon G. Carter Stadium for the 2012 season, so there is much to look forward to in the coming months.

To begin its season ticket campaign, TCU turned to Concussion and Cockrell Enovation to create a stunning piece that has us already salivating for fall, football and tailgating. Historic images are combined with pictures of current players to create nostalgia and excitement about the upcoming season. Also, the combination of metallic inks, gloss and dull varnishes and spot UV show that TCU, as well as this brochure, are ready for the big stage.

We’re definitely ready for some football.

Congratulations to John Humphrey and John Hoover, recipients of the 2011 Cleat Cockrell Award. We’re so proud of you and thank you for the tremendous impact you’ve made on the organization.

Created in 2007, the Cleat Cockrell Award is presented at Cockrell Enovation’s annual sales dinner and recognizes individuals that:

Put Cockrell Enovation above your own interests

Advance the Cockrell reputation throughout the printing industry

Exhibit professionalism at all times

Achieve excellence in sales volume and gross profit

Conduct business in a manner that others wish to follow

Treat fellow employees with the same high regard provided to customers

The award honors achievement in both sales and production, since we all know sales excellence is impossible without excellence in production.

A bit about this year’s winners:

John Humphrey

John Humphrey joined the Cockrell sales team in 1989…that’s correct…1989. A consistent performer year after year, John manages to find clients that push the envelope and make us do things we never thought possible.

John Hoover

John Hoover joined Cockrell in 2007 and immediately made an impact in the prepress department. With a belief in making life simple for customers and sales, John definitely fits the vision of Cockrell Enovation.

Congratulations John and John (there might be something to that name around here).

Previous winners of the Cleat Cockrell award include:

2007: John Cockrell

2008: Ken Gaskins

2009: Karen Owen Cockerham

For some, business cards are a necessary evil. An unavoidable object.

For others, business cards are the true element of identity. A 24/7 icon that says “this is me…this is my brand.”

In this industry, we inevitably work on both. But let’s be honest – most projects fall into the first description. Fortunately, we have these rare occasions where we get to work on a business card that is actually inspiring. The business cards for David Colvin truly did inspire us. Designed by George Katz for a New York-based stylist, we can’t seem to keep our eyes and hands off of these cards.

For starters, adding a touch of foil to any card goes a long way. But next, the red gilded edges really tested our ability to reach back to the past and create a unique card that is impressive and makes a serious impact. Overall, the business cards for David Colvin represent what a business card can and should be – a true extension of your identity.

Over the past few years, natural gas, specifically the Barnett Shale, has been a significant topic throughout North Texas. Recognized as one of the largest natural gas shale fields in the world, the Barnett Shale holds an estimated 50 trillion cubic feet of natural gas – enough to supply almost all of the gas-heated homes in the United States for five years.

As a leading producer of natural gas, Chesapeake Energy has drilled nearly 2,000 gas wells in the Barnett Shale, with a majority of wells located in Tarrant and Johnson counties. Not only does the production of natural gas provide a significant economic impact to the North Texas area, Chesapeake Energy has been able to make significant contributions to local health, social service, education and other non-profit organizations through the area. To highlight the impact of the Barnett Shale and natural gas production, Cheseapeake Energy produced this community report. The report is definitely eye-catching, but it also provided a chance to highlight data services offered by Cockrell Enovation.

Making a decision on total quantity can always be a challenge when producing a direct mail item. With a multi-page document and potentially tens of thousands of pieces, this is a critical decision that can significantly impact the overall postage cost of the direct mailer. To ensure the target audience was reached with very little waste, Chesapeake Energy partnered with Cockrell Enovation’s data services team to purchase a saturation list that could be paired down to specific neighborhoods, blocks or streets – all through an application paired with Google Maps as shown below. As a result, the community report landed in the hands of all intended recipients with very little waste, creating significant savings.

Dallas/Fort Worth is well-regarded as one of the finest cultural destinations of the world. To achieve this status, it took the hard work and steady vision of a select few individuals with a passion for art and a desire to bring the world’s greatest artwork to the Metroplex. One of these individuals, Raymond Nasher, maintained a commitment to sharing his passion for modern and contemporary art, and accomplished this through steady acquisitions beginning in the 1950s and the foundation of the Nasher Sculpture Center.

Patron support is vital to the life of a museum, providing funding for operations and continuous investment in exhibits and education. To communicate recent events, the Nasher Sculpture Center produced a Summer Newsletter highlighting upcoming exhibitions, sightings, collections and programming initiatives.

Of course, sharp photographs with detail and accurate color are a must for any museum piece, and this newsletter met all expectations. We love the HP Indigo’s ability to reproduce eye-catching photographs on uncoated paper, and the Summer Newsletter for the Nasher Sculpture Center is definitely an example of how far digital printing has progressed in recent years.

For colleges and universities, the viewbook is an opportunity to inspire potential incoming students and showcase what the institution is all about. Fortunately, print plays an important role in the process as universities must exhaust creative energie to create pieces that not only represent the personality of the institution, but also stand out from the crowd.

This year’s TCU Viewbook definitely accomplishes these goals and also displays how print can touch senses not reachable through other forms of communication. The theme of “Expect the Unexpected” is consistent with not only the vision of the university but is communicated throughout the piece by adding a dimensional element to each photograph through the use of MetalFX printing techniques.

If you’re not familiar with MetalFX, it is a technology that adds combines a metallic base to 4-color process to create a lifelike, almost 3-dimensional feel to photographs containing metal, chrome or other objects.

Flip through the pages of this year’s TCU Viewbook and you will certainly enjoy the unexpected with each turn of the page.

How does an agency move beyond simply putting together pretty or witty campaigns? By generating results.

Concussion, founded in 2001 by Allan Wallach and Andrew Yanez, is in business to generate results for its clients. With a focus on being a full-service, integrated marketing communications company, Concussion takes a 360-degree approach to stimulate customer engagement from almost every touch point. By focusing on strategy rather than individual components and design, Concussion is able to accomplish what its clients want – consumer action.

To communicate its philosophy, Concussion created this pitch book that not only showcases award-winning design and marketing, but communicates actual results from the campaigns. After all, while a combination of print ads, billboards, direct mail pieces and TV campaigns may have generated dozens of Addy Awards, what really matters is the ability to pitch things like “76% increase in coin-in over Q4 ’09 average” and “115% increase in new card sign-ups in February ’10″.

The piece itself is definitely a selling point, perfect-bound and filled with great photos, but what really caught our attention were the results!

Additional Print Details:

Text Paper: 100# Utopia One Dull Text

As you may have already noticed, we have been posting quite a bit of content related to mobile marketing. Many may ask the question, “Why is a printing company so focused on mobile marketing?” While that is a valid question, our focus on Unified Marketing Communications has enabled us to link all phases of marketing campaigns together to create a consistent and effective message.

In the past year, mobile has become one of the fastest growing channels in marketing communication. There’s a good reason why – nearly all U.S. adults own cell phones, and over 30-percent of these are smartphones. With the amount of smartphone owners increasing on a yearly basis, the ability to link print and mobile through QR codes is a highly effective method to interact with customers and capture critical data. Once the data is captured, marketers can then customize future interactions with each customer.

Integrating print with mobile marketing enables print to move beyond being a passive medium to being one that provides complete customer engagement. To increase the effectiveness of campaigns, Cockrell Enovation has developed a unique platform that allows for hosted mobile landing pages that not only provide greater interaction with customers, but also provide marketers with significant reporting tools that further help to automate and personalize the marketing process.

Increased mobile usage is not a short-term business phenomenon. To assist marketers with crafting dynamic campaigns that improve ROI and generate results, Cockrell Enovation has developed a solid Marketing Services team that can assist with development and implementation.

Please contact us for more information on how to jump-start your marketing campaigns.
